Karnatic songs collection in esnips and how to download them

with 3 comments

I think I have an inclination towards good music, whether it is Indian film songs, Western music, Karnatic or folk songs — just like so many people out there.

But I don’t explore internet for music or videos too much, and so what follows might not be something interesting or new at all. In fact you might know it already. Disclaimers aside, I came across a nice file sharing site called esnips in which lots of good Samaritans have shared lots of high quality music. One of them is a Software Engineer from Bangalore, Deepthi Mamiduru, who has got a wonderful collection of Karnatic songs.

I created a playlist out of her Karnatic collection, and you can click here to listen.

If you use IE (or are ready to use IE when using esnips), you can download the songs too, but it is not obvious how. But my wife, Preethi, found a way out rather accidentally. You first play the song in IE so that you allow it to record a URL in the IE’s “History” tab (Ctrl+Shift+H) which will appear as something like “?id=1192939088625”. Click that link, a dialog box appears that asks whether you want to Open or Save it. Choose Save. The File Save dialog appears, and you can use it to save the mp3 file to your PC.

Probably the same can be accomplished in Firefox too, but I couldn’t figure out how.
