The best write-up for any programmer

with 4 comments

I stumbled upon this wonderful article on programming by none other than Chuck Jazdzewski. It is quite simply the best and the most concise article on the difficult topic of “how to become a better programmer”. Though I have tried my luck at explaining that, it pales in comparison to this article by one of the grand daddies of the programming world.

Oh, and just in case you are wondering who the hell Chuck is, here is the info: Chuck was part of the core team of three great guys who designed Delphi, the other two being Anders Hejlsberg — the father of both Delphi and C# — and Gary Whizin. Chuck has since left Borland and is now working with Microsoft.

Again, I wouldn’t have stumbled upon it so soon but for the magic of RSS. Long live RSS! Long live Google Reader! Hey, but seriously, are you not using RSS yet? :).

  1. I remember your having said a similar thing about Daniel Read (developerdotstart) a couple of years back…where there were(are) quite a few articles on professiona programmers and other aspects of s/w engg. Is this a part of evolution ?

In fact this makes me wonder …how come anything and everything even remotely associated with Delphi becomes the best !!??!!

  2. Yeah, you are right. What is best in any field/sphere is a relative and subjective thing. Also, as you rightly said, as once gets older (and hopefully wiser) one might feel that something that they read just now is better than something that they read a few years back. I don’t see anything wrong or bad with that!

To know why anything and everything “remotely” associated with Delphi is proclaimed to be the best by myself, consider the number of awards Delphi has won over the years: http://www.borland.com/us/company/news/awards/index.jsp
Simply put, “Simply put, Delphi is the best tool for the job for the vast majority of jobs to be done out there” as Nick Hodges said sometime back in his old blog [http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:lDtzAlJ3owgJ:www.lemanix.com/nickblog/PermaLink,guid,339.aspx+Nick+Hodges+Pick+the+Tool+that+meets&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a]. And Nick, FYI, is the Product Manager for Delphi today.

Yes, we are a minority (a la Apple computer users) but we know that we are using the best software development tool out there. Amen!

  3. If Delphi is the best, i’m wondering why its not HOT in the community?
Java, Python, Perl, C++, Ruby, .Net, why Delphi is not up there?
I believe there is something inherently missing which makes Delphi not HOT. I’m novice to Delphi so don’t know what that is?
Probably you can enlighten us on that.
And I think Apple is a bad analogy here.
