We won!

“Football is a game played by 22 players. And then Germany win.” — Gary Linekar, England Football Team, 1984 – 1992

We won! Germany beat Argentina 4-2 on penalties to enter their 11th FIFA World Cup Semi-final, a record Brazil would equalize if they end Zidane’s career later today.

I guess we can attribute the above Linekar comment to the outgoing Argentine coach Jose Pekerman as well, after his bitter experience earlier in the day. I will try to update this post over the weekend, but for now, don’t miss this piece on how the Argentines masterfully [pun intended] dug their own grave!

Btw, Apple has something to say on this, and I came up with the title for this post inspired by it.

Go Germany, Go! All the way back to Berlin and lift the Cup!

  1. Just a correction – yesterdays match was played by 23 players – 12 in favour of Germany and that tilted the balance coupled with stupid replacements from Arg. How many fouls were disallowed and how many were handed to Arg – Sorin and Maxi Rodriguez – were booked – for what ? Yes, the ass***** might well go on to win the world cup – though i pray that doesnt happen for football’s sake.

  3. well, it is debatable whether Azzurri really deserved to lift the cup? Ofcourse, they did their bit of on-field theatrical hysterics — be it Grosso against the Socceroos’ or Materazzi against zizou :)

looking back Harsha question feels still relevant — did each of the teams did enough to deserve an entry into the second round and beyond ….

mm… if the number of goals scored is an indication, the answer is obvious !

  4. Raagu is blogging!
I haven’t met him for years now; so pictures of him conjured up in my mind were of a tough executive, a authoritative manager, an indiscriminate executioner who hardly smiles and goes on completing project after project :)
Well my imagination is not the only perspective….hope to see the other side of him in his logs :)

  5. […] Of course, I also remember this month for the great German run at the Fifa World Cup! To me, they along with Argentina were the teams at the World Cup, though France sprang back to life late in the competition. […]
